In episode 60 of the IoT For All Podcast, AVSystem Americas President William L. Yan joined us to talk about device management and its role in IoT, as well as how ensuring proper device management during development can streamline the process to scale an IoT solution.

William has worked in all aspects of telecom, from marketing to engineering to customer care. Given his extensive experience, we asked William what he foresaw as the effect of IoT on other industries as adoption continues to grow. He shared his thoughts on the inevitability of the fourth industrial revolution and human nature’s tendency to constantly seek a higher level of efficiency.

To start the conversation, William shared with us some background on what exactly device management is and how it fits into the development of IoT solutions and services. He also talked us through a couple of Applications where device management is critical to a solution’s success.

William spoke to some of the trends in protocols like device management and MQTT, when one has benefits over the others, and why specific protocols are gaining in popularity.

Turning the conversation to the IoT industry on the whole, William shared his thoughts on some of the biggest challenges facing companies looking to develop and deploy IoT initiatives. One of the most common obstacles he’d seen was the lack of a clear and focused goal for what the solution was meant to accomplish. This could be implementing IoT for IoT’s sake, or the simple lack of communication between customer-facing teams and the team actually building out the solution.

To finish out our conversation, William gave his perspective on the current climate and how the IoT landscape might change with the COVID-19 pandemic over the next year. He forecasted a heavier reliance on automation to better enable humans to work more remotely and with greater flexibility.
