IoT For All’s #AskIoT team sits down with Scott Nelson to talk about his role as a Chief Product Officer, how important design is when building an IoT solution and major trends in the Internet of Things industry. He reminds us to make sure what we build matters.

In this episode, we dive into the different hats a CPO wears when building an end-to-end solution, as well as the key areas that require the most attention. Scott also puts emphasis on the shift to edge computing and how it is playing a big (and positive) role in the Internet of Things space.

We wrap up the episode talking about legacy systems and the tradeoffs between building on top of an existing system/technology and building from scratch. It comes down to value, which is determined by more than just cost.

Scott leaves us with an important thing to remember: “Be sure you are making your efforts matter. Make sure that what you build matters. I think that’s an obligation those of us who work in technology have.”

#AskIoT Questions:

  1. What’s the difference between Machine Learning and AI, and why is it important for IoT?
  2. As the product lead for my company, I am trying to assess backend options for an application (MVP stage). What is important for me to keep in mind when building the MVP that helps set us up for success as we move towards scaling?
  3. How are legacy systems affecting the shift to IoT?
