Sentient Buildings to Achieve Substantial Energy Savings for University Square in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, September 30, 2019 – Sentient Buildings, a leading cloud-based building automation company, today announced it has enabled University Square in Philadelphia, a 442-unit affordable housing property for seniors, to achieve substantial energy savings while maintaining comfort.

Utilizing its longstanding expertise in the industry, Sentient Buildings installed electric heat pumps as well as thermostats in each apartment, allowing for individual tenant control without needing to rely on the centralized boiler system.  Sentient is also responsible for actively monitoring the property to ensure optimal efficiency.

“Through electrification of the heating and cooling systems, we have enabled University Square to realize significant cost reductions, and at the same time provide greater comfort and control to every tenant,” said David Unger, CEO of Sentient Buildings. “Working closely with ownership led by Jaime Birman, Director of Development for Orbach Affordable Housing Solutions, we were able to successfully develop this innovative approach that can serve as a model for other residential buildings nationwide.”

The electric heat pumps operate as the building’s primary energy source above 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and provide more efficient, targeted heating and cooling to individual units when necessary.  For example, some apartments may be naturally warmer during certain times of the day if exposed to direct sunlight.

Orbach Affordable Housing Solutions recently completed its transformation of University Square, following a $25 million investment into the property.

“We are very proud of this project,” said Jay Reinhard, President of Orbach Affordable Housing Solutions.  “It is our mission to ensure families have a safe, comfortable place to live, and with the transformation of University Square, we are providing our tenants with the improved community they deserve.”

AI Can Solve Our Driving Dependence — If We Don’t Mess It Up

Today, one only has to step out onto a New York street or fly over LA’s tangled highways to see the problems: auto-clogged roads, low-lying vehicle-fume smog, and barely-moving lines of single drivers sitting in multi-passenger cars. Some (mistakenly) cast luxurious self-driving cars as a means to turn the frustrations of a daily commute into a valuable period of relaxation or productivity. In this piece, I explain why that strategy won’t just be ineffective and worsen our commutes, but will also ultimately compel consumers to embrace the very transport philosophy that made us traffic-beleaguered in the first place. I also make a case for why using self-driving cars as public transport can be used as a means to eradicate driving dependence in the long term.

AI in IoT Security: Friend or Foe?

Unfortunately, some of the difficulties facing AI in cybersecurity can be exploited by hackers. AI can be used for IoT security, or it can be used against it.
