IoT HELPING INDUSTRIES ATTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL GOALSÂ Â

BOULDER, COLO,  June 12, 2023 – Internet of Things (IoT) technology can speed up  projects that reduce harmful carbon emissions driving climate change, according to FreeWave Technologies, a leading provider of industrial wireless and IIoT solutions.
To help lower carbon emissions in the atmosphere, industries are turning to regulated carbon credit markets and voluntary carbon offset markets to help shrink their carbon footprints. Reducing emissions can be accelerated by using IoT sensors, network configurations, and cloud-based analytics that improve the accuracy, reliability and scalability of data used for voluntary carbon offset verification projects.
Carbon offset markets are designed to help companies meet climate change targets. These markets enable industries to compensate for unavoidable emissions by investing in certified projects that reduce or remove carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the leading greenhouse gases.
A Bain & Co. report said the voluntary carbon market recently surpassed $1 billion in global value and could exceed $30 billion in annual value by the end of this decade.
But verification methods for carbon offsetting markets can lack uniformity. This has raised uncertainties about the fair market value of carbon credits as well as concerns about the efficacy of projects they fund. As a result, many organizations have shunned making investments in the carbon offsets markets to meet net-zero commitments. IoT technology, however, can help build trust in this market by providing data used to confirm the efficacy of certified carbon offsetting projects.
“For carbon markets to achieve their potential, reliable emissions measurements and data are needed for valuation and verification,” said Jeff Horton, FreeWave’s chief revenue officer. “Using incontrovertible metrics to assess project performance boosts investor confidence, while sellers can ensure their credits are backed by measurable emissions reductions. Ultimately, this could help move the voluntary carbon market toward a more transparent and trustworthy model.”
Horton added: “Beyond environmental and humanitarian imperatives, investing in climate-smart IoT technologies can be part of a long-term revenue enhancement strategy, based on the idea that verifiably carbon-neutral products will warrant premium pricing among pro-environmental consumers.”
