Preventative maintenance is work done regularly, on a schedule, to decrease the likelihood that equipment experiences malfunctions or downtime. This maintenance work is done while machines are working properly to avoid the need for putting them offline. The schedule usually is set based on manufacturer guidelines and experience and contrasts with predictive maintenance in that it does not require the use of IoT-enabled sensors or analytics. It can, however, result in greater expense through early replacement of parts or unnecessary dispatch of workers.
